Today at lunch I went for a run through Little Bennett Regional Park. I scheduled this run earlier this week for a day that looked to have decent weather. And when the time came to get ready to go, I had to pull myself away from work to make it happen.

And I’m glad I did. It was a beautiful, cold day and the run itself was just the therapy I needed to clear my mind and take care of my body.

But how many times do we sacrifice ourselves to our work? Or to other people or other things that seem like priorities?

My guess is that it happens far too much.

Interestingly enough, we aren’t really taught to focus on ourselves. We’re taught to give what we have, to share our “stuff” with others, to not be selfish.

Yet while we are being unselfish and virtuous we aren’t taking care of the one thing that enables us to give to others – ourselves.

So if you’re reading this, do me a favor. Pick a thing for yourself. Whatever that thing is – exercise, massage, reading a good book, finding time for your hobby. Schedule it and make it happen. No excuses. Do it.

Take care of you. No one else is going to do it for you.
