I’ve recently been reading the book Tribe of Mentors by Timothy “Tim” Ferriss. The book is a collection of short excerpts of advice and perspective by some of the world’s most successful people.

Yesterday, I read the section by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who is an actor and founder of HITRECORD.

Joseph says:

A good friend of mine once said: ‘It’s really easy to say what you’re not. It’s hard to say what you are.’ …Anybody can talk about why something’s bad. Try doing something good.

Let’s apply this to talent and talent management.

It’s easy to be negative and focus on what people don’t have and what could go wrong.

It’s more difficult to see what people do have and what could go right.

Anyone can be negative. It takes zero skill and requires no risk.

It takes courage and vision to see someone’s potential and to wonder what could go right. It requires taking a risk.

Not everyone can do that.

But you can.
